As a parent, I’m sure every one of you has had that sinking feeling, it’s Saturday afternoon and the kids are saying they’re bored… Fear not! Here are a few ideas for some age appropriate activities to get your little one exploring the wonderful world of music and music play…
1. Coffee Can Drum
This activity only requires a few household items and can provide your little one with some excitement. Most little ones love banging and this activity gives children the opportunity to practice their motor skills as well as introducing them to the joys of creating rhythm and sound.
- two paper plates
- hole punch and string/wool
- dried pasta, beans or something similar
- Optional: stickers, paint, markers, construction paper, etc to decorate
1.Ask your little one to decorate the bottom side of two paper plates using colorful crayons, paint or stickers etc.
2.Turn the paper plates the right way up and put some pasta or beans in the one plate. Cover with the other plate and staple the two plates together.
3.Using a hole punch, punch around 8 holes along the sides of the paper plate and ask your little one to thread the wool or ribbon through. (This is mainly for decoration and may require some help from you if the child is battling. )
4.Now put on some of your child’s favorite music and join in!
An oldie but a goodie! This works great with even as few as two children, and encourages little minds to practice listening while getting them to burn up some of that excess energy. All you need is some of their favorite music! Explain that when you stop the music everyone must freeze in their position. You can try having competitions to see who can hold their position for the longest time or who has frozen in the craziest position.
While these are only three of the millions of ideas out there, you can find some other great activities online, or check back here soon… I am adding new activities as often as I can, and am always on the look-out for fresh new ideas!
